blood count, method for determining the number of red (erythrocytes) and white (leukocytes) blood cells in a certain volume of blood. This test can be used as a preliminary step in diagnosing some diseases. Leukemia, for instance, causes an increase in the white blood cell count, while a decrease in the number of red blood cells is associated with anemia. A determination of the percentage of various types of white blood cells (neutrophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils, basophils, and monocytes) is called a differential blood count. In one trial, Sawyers reports, 31 of 36 imatinib-resistant patients in an early phase of leukemia saw their white blood counts return to normal after treatment with BMS-254825. While routine testing such as blood counts, pap smears and drug screening comprise 90 percent of the clinical tests conducted nationwide, they account for only 70 percent of overall revenues. Samples were drawn at the same time points for platelet studies in 2000 from subjects reporting no use of anti-inflammatory drugs in the prior two weeks and for complete blood counts in 2001. |
