Blout, Elkin
Born July 2, 1919, in New York. American biochemist. Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA and the New York Academy of Sciences. Blout graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1935. In 1943 he joined the staff of the Polaroid Corporation. He was director of chemical research for Polaroid from 1948 to 1958, and from 1958 to 1962 he was vice-president of the firm; he became a consultant to Polaroid in 1963. In 1962 he was appointed a professor at Harvard University, and from 1965 to 1969 he served as chairman of the university’s department of biochemistry. Blout’s principal works deal with the biochemistry of proteolytic enzymes and proteins in the membranes of erythrocytes. Blout became a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1976.
