In south-central MN, west of Rochester; established Mar 5, 1853 (prior to statehood) from unorganized territory. Name Origin: For the Blue Earth River, which runs through it; a transliteration of the Nankato name for the color of the earth in the river, used as a pigment by the Sisseton Sioux
