Bluetooth profiles
The ways wireless Bluetooth transmission can be used are defined in "profile" specifications, and the major profiles are summarized below. See Bluetooth.

HSP - Cellphone to Headset
The Headset Profile (HSP) is the most ubiquitous Bluetooth application. First used in 1998.

HFP - Cellphone to Car Audio System
First used in 2002, the Handsfree Profile (HFP) supports telephoning while driving. Headsets may also include this profile to take advantage of features such as redial and call waiting.

A2DP - Music Source to Speaker
The Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) supports mono and stereo sound between a Bluetooth source and a headset or audio system. For example, a smartphone transmits MP3 music via A2DP and phone calls via HSP or HFP (see above).

PBAP - Transfer Phone Contacts
The Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP) supports the transfer of a cellphone's contact list to a car's audio system.

HID - Mice, Keyboards, Joysticks, Game Controls
The Human Interface Device (HID) profile is based on the USB protocol for user interface controllers.

AVRCP - Remote Control
The AV Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) enables a smartphone to function as a remote control for Bluetooth-enabled computers and home theater equipment.

BIP - Image Transfer
The Basic Imaging Profile (BIP) supports transmitting images between Bluetooth Devices.

BPP/HCRP - Send to Printer
The Basic Printing Profile (BPP) supports sending data to the printer without requiring a printer driver in the transmitting device. However, the Hard Copy Cable Replacement Profile (HCRP) does require drivers.

CTP - Gateway to a Landline
The Cordless Telephony Profile (CTP) supports Bluetooth gateways that allow cellphones to connect to landlines when users are in their homes and offices.

ICP - Walkie Talkie Capability
The Intercom Profile (ICP) allows two Bluetooth phones to have always-on communications. See walkie talkie.
