Bodh Gaya or Buddh Gaya (both: bd gä`yä), village (1991 pop. 21,692), Bihar state, E central India. According to tradition, Buddha Buddha [Skt.,=the enlightened One], usual title given to the founder of Buddhism. He is also called the Tathagata [he who has come thus], Bhagavat [the Lord], and Sugata [well-gone]. He probably lived from 563 to 483 B.C.

 received enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. The city has extensive relics of Buddhist sculpture (8th–12th cent. A.D.) and is the seat of Magadh Univ. Buddhist pilgrims from throughout the world travel there.
