Boffrand, Gabriel Germain
Born May 7, 1667, in Nantes; died Mar. 18, 1754, in Paris. French architect. Boffrand was a pupil of J. Hardouin-Mansart. As a builder (the cathedral in Nancy, 1742; Hôtel d’Amelot, 1712; other mansions in Paris; bridges; and other structures) and theoretician (Book on Architecture, 1745), Boffrand was an exponent of classicism and the architectural traditions of antiquity and Palladio. At the same time, his treatment of the interior of the Hôtel de Soubise in Paris (1735–40) is a brilliant example of a decorative interior ensemble in the rococo style.
