Bogatyrev, Anatolii Vasil’evich 

Born July 31 (Aug. 13), 1913, in Vitebsk. Soviet composer, Peoples’ Artist of the Byelorussian SSR (1968). Member of the CPSU since 1954.

Bogatyrev graduated from the Byelorussian Conservatory in 1937 in V. A. Zolotarev’s class. He has taught there since 1948 and has been a professor since 1960. Among his students are G. M. Vagner, E. A. Glebov, Iu. V. Semeniako, and E. M. Tyrmand. Bogatyrev has composed the operas In the Woods of Poles’e (performed in 1939 in Minsk) and Nadezhda Durova (performed in 1956 in Minsk); the cantatas Belarus’ (1949) and Byelorussian Songs (1967); two symphonies; concerti for cello and contrabass; music for dramatic presentations and films; and choral works and arrangements of Byelorussian folk songs. He was a deputy to the first through the fourth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the Byelorussian SSR. Bogatyrev won the State Prize of the USSR (1941), the Order of Lenin, four other orders, and medals.
