Bogdanov, Mikhail Aleksandrovich 

Born Nov. 4 (17), 1914, in Vyborg. Soviet film artist. Became People’s Artist of the RSFSR in 1969 and Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1959. Member of the CPSU since 1950.

Bogdanov graduated from the department of art of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in 1943. He was a set designer for the Soiuzdetfil’m Studio, and since 1944, for the Mosfil’m Studio. Bogdanov works jointly with the artistG. A. Miasnikov. They were set designers for the following color films: The Stone Flower (1946), Michurin (1949), The Heroes of Shipka (1955, in collaboration with the Bulgarian artistG. Popov), The Communist (1958), Journey Beyond the Three Seas (1958, in collaboration with Indian artists), and Hussar Ballad (1962). One of the most important works by Bogdanov and G. A. Miasnikov is the film War and Peace, based on the work of the same name by L. N. Tolstoy (1965–67, parts 1–4). Bogdanov began teaching at VGIK in 1944 and became a professor in 1965. He has been awarded the Badge of Honor and medals.
