Bogdanov, Modest Nikolaevich 

Born 1841, in the village of Russkaia Bakshanka, Simbirsk Province; died Mar. 16 (28), 1888, in St. Petersburg. Russian ornithologist and zoogeographer.

In 1864, Bogdanov graduated from the University of Kazan. In 1873 he participated in the Khivinsk expedition; he presented some valuable suggestions (later partially implemented) for the organization of a fishery on the Amu Darya River. Bogdanov worked at the University of Kazan, and from 1881 he was a professor at the University of St. Petersburg. He studied the fauna of the Volga Region, the Caucasus, and the area around the Aral and Caspian seas, as well as the Murmansk littoral. Bogdanov was the founder of the Society of Naturalists at the University of Kazan and one of the directors of the Society of Naturalists at the University of St. Petersburg. He was one of the originators of popular Russian zoological literature.
