Bogolepov, Nikolai Pavlovich
Born Nov. 27 (Dec. 9), 1846, in Serpukhov; died Mar. 2 (15), 1901, in St. Petersburg. Russian statesman. Professor of Roman law at Moscow University; rector of the university (1883–87, 1891–93). Bogolepov was minister of public education from 1898 to 1901 and carried out a reactionary course of suppressing student disturbances and rooting out freethinking. (At the University of Kiev, 183 students were sent into the army in 1900, the body of opposition-minded professors was dismissed, and so on.) He died of a wound inflicted on Feb. 14, 1901, by P. V. Karpovich, a student who had been expelled from Moscow University. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
