Bohol (bôhôl`), island (1990 pop. 948,403), 1,491 sq mi (3,862 sq km), the Philippines, one of the Visayan Islands, SW of Leyte. It is a major corn-producing area. Rice, cacao, and hemp are also grown, and manganese and copper are mined. Bohol prov. comprises the main island and several offshore islands; its capital is at Tagbilaran. BoholIsland (pop., 2000: 1,137,268), Philippines. Located in the Visayan group north of Mindanao, it has an area of 1,492 sq mi (3,864 sq km). Visited by the Spanish in the mid-16th century, it remained under their rule until the late 19th century. Its character is essentially rural and its economy agricultural. The chief settlements, including Loon and Talibon, are on the coast. Bohol an island of the central Philippines. Chief town: Tagbilaran. Pop.: 1 139 130 (2000).
