boiler plate [′bȯil·ər ‚plāt] (computer science) A commonly used expression or phrase that is stored in memory and can be copied into a word-processing document as needed. (geology) A fairly smooth surface on a cliff, consisting of flush or overlapping slabs of rock, having little or no foothold. (hydrology) A crusty, frozen surface of snow. (metallurgy) Flat-rolled steel, usually ¼ to ½ inch (6 to 13 millimeters) thick; used mainly for covering ships and making boilers and tanks. Also known as boiler steel.
