Boklevskii, Petr Mikhailovich
Born June 12 (24), 1816, in the village of Elshino, Riazan’ Province; died Mar. 10 (22), 1897, in Moscow. Russian artist and illustrator. Boklevskii joined K. P. Briullov’s class at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1845. He received the title of artist in 1852. Furthering the tradition of satirical graphics of the 1840’s, Boklevskii developed the genre of the psychologically pointed social portrait of literary characters (in the satirical albums of lithographs and illustrations A Gallery of Gogolian Types: The Inspector General, 1858; Types from the Poem Dead Souls, 1895; and others). Boklevskii completed albums of illustrations for the works of A. N. Ostrovskii (1859–60), P. I. Mel’nikov-Pecherskii (published in 1882, 1914, and 1934), and others. REFERENCESKuz’minskii, K.
