On the northwestern border of MS, north of Greenville; organized Feb 9, 1836 from Choctaw cession. Name Origin: For Simon Bolivar (1783-1830), Venezuelan leader of South American revolt against Spanish rule; known as "the Liberator" and "George Washington to South America."
