Boma (bō`mə), city (1984 pop. 197,617), Bas-Congo province, W Congo (Kinshasa), on the Congo River estuary. A port and railhead, it exports tropical timber, bananas, cacao, and palm products. Boma was the capital of the Congo Free State (after 1908 the Belgian Congo) from 1887 to 1926, when it was changed to Leopoldville (now Kinshasa). Boma a port in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaïre), on the Congo River, capital of the Belgian Congo until 1926: forest products. Pop.: 607 000 (2005 est.)
