Bonomi, Ivanoe 

Born Oct. 18, 1873, in Mantua; died Apr. 20, 1951, in Rome. Italian statesman and political figure.

Bonomi was one of the leaders of the reformist wing of the Socialist Party. He advocated cooperation with the liberal bourgeoisie and the government of Giolitti. In 1912, together with Bissolati and other right reformists, he was expelled from the Socialist Party for supporting the government in the aggressive war in Libya. At the time of World War I he was an interventionist (an advocate of Italy’s entry into the war). From 1916 to 1919 he was minister of social works, and from 1920 to 1921, minister of war. He was prime minister from July 1921 to February 1922. In the period of fascist dictatorship (1922–43) he was not engaged in political activity. In 1943 and 1944 he headed the Committee of National Liberation in Rome. He was prime minister from June 1944 to June 1945, and then chairman of the senate from 1948 to 1951.
