Established: Authorized on April 5, 1956. Location: On VA 122 (Booker T. Washington Hwy), 22 miles southeast of Roanoke, Virginia. From I-81, take I-581, then US 220 south from Roanoke to VA 122; from the Blue Ridge Parkway, take VA 43 south to VA 122; and from Lynchburg, take US 460 west to VA 122. Facilities: Picnic area, visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Activities: Hiking, guided tour, educational programs. Special Features: On April 5, 1856, Booker T. Washington was born a slave on the 207-acre farm of James and Elizabeth Burroughs. This site was the birthplace and early childhood home of the famous black leader and educator.
