Border Field State Park Location: 15 miles south of San Diego via I-5, Dairy Mart Road, and Monument Road. Facilities: Picnic areas, trails (é), restrooms (é), visitor center (3 miles north in Imperial Beach), exhibits (é). Activities: Surf fishing, swimming, hiking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, birding. Special Features: Located in the extreme southwest corner of the continental United States, park includes an obelisk set into the border fence that marks the international boundary established with Mexico by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. The park contains much of the Tijuana River National Estuarine Reserve, an important wildlife habitat. The salt and freshwater marshes provide refuge for several species of migrating waterfowl and resident wading birds, including the black-necked stilt, avocet, teal, American widgeon, and pelican.
