Borghese familyNoble Italian family, originally from Siena, who first gained fame in the 13th century as magistrates, ambassadors, and other public officials. They moved to Rome in the 16th century and there, after Camillo Borghese was elected (1605) as Pope Paul V, the family rose in wealth and fame. Prominent family members included the adopted Scipione Caffarelli (later Borghese) (1576–1633), a cardinal and patron of the arts, and Camillo F. L. Borghese (1775–1832), who married Pauline Bonaparte and played an important role in Franco-Italian relations. Want to thank TFD for its existence? This ceremonial combination of architecture, landscape, and the rituals of villa life, forged a new identity for the Borghese family, marking their move from Siena to Rome and from ecclesiastical nobility to secular aristocracy. The discriminating, wide-ranging patronage of the Borghese family, especially of Cardinal Scipione, is reflected in the spectacular collection--from Roman mosaics to masterpieces of seventeenth-century painting and sculpture--still housed in the Villa Borghese. |
