Boris Iakovlev

Iakovlev, Boris Nikolaevich 

Born Sept. 5 (17), 1890, in Moscow; died there Dec. 8, 1972. Soviet painter. People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1962). Corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1958). Member of the CPSU from 1960.

Iakovlev studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture under A. M. Vasnetsov and A. S. Stepanov from 1915 to 1918. From 1922 to 1932 he was a member of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia. He taught at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography from 1956 to 1963; he was named a professor in 1960. One of the originators of the Soviet industrial landscape, Iakovlev produced such paintings as Transport Returns to Normal (1923, Tret’iakov Gallery, Moscow) and The Cranes Are Dominating (1958–59, Russian Museum, Leningrad). Iakovlev’s paintings are marked by broad brushstrokes and the use of impasto.
