Boris Solomonovich Veisbrod

Veisbrod, Boris Solomonovich 

Born Oct. 22 (Nov. 3), 1874, in Vil’komir, now Ukmėrgė; died Aug. 6, 1942, in Omsk. Soviet surgeon and organizer in the field of public health. Member of the Communist Party from 1904.

In 1899, Veisbrod graduated from the medical department of the University of Kharkov. In 1917 he was chief of the department of public health of the Zamoskvorech’e soviet and commissar of medical institutions for Moscow. From 1918 to 1922 he was a member of the Extraordinary Commission for Control of Epidemics on the Turkestan and Southwestern Fronts. From 1922, Veisbrod was a professor at the Second Moscow Medical Institute and head physician of the Second Municipal Hospital in Moscow which, until its liquidation in 1959, bore his name. He was one of the organizers of the Institute of Emergency Care in Moscow (now the Moscow N. V. Sklifosovskii Scientific Research First Aid Institute). Veisbrod was one of the doctors who treated V. I. Lenin. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Star.
