Zavadovskii, Boris Mikhailovich 

Born Jan. 1 (13), 1895, in Elizavetgrad, present-day Kirovograd; died Mar. 31, 1951, in Moscow. Soviet biologist; academician of the V. I. Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1935). Member of the CPSU since 1932.

Zavadovskii graduated from Moscow University in 1919. He was a professor of biology at the la. M. Sverdlov Communist University in Moscow from 1920 to 1930. He was the director of the Laboratory (later the institute) of Experimental Biology at Sverdlov University; in 1931, the laboratory became part of the All-Union Institute of Livestock Raising. He was the founder and director of the K. A. Timiriazev Biological Museum, which opened in 1922. At the same time (from 1936 to 1941 and again beginning in 1943) he was chairman of the department of Darwinism at the V. P. Potemkin Moscow Pedagogical Institute. His main field of research was the physiology of the endocrine glands. He wrote several popular books on biology. He was a member of the German Academy of Naturalists in Halle (1932) and of the London Zoological Society (1940).
