Borodai, Vasilii Zakharovich 

Born Aug. 5 (18), 1917, in Ekaterinoslav. Soviet sculptor. People’s Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1964). Corresponding member of the Academy of Art of the USSR (1967). Member of the CPSU since 1945. Chairman of the Artists Union of the Ukrainian SSR since 1968. Studied at the Kiev Art Institute (1947–53) with M. G. Lysenko.

Borodai’s works are crystallized in the form of portraits (P. G. Tychina in granite and L. N. Revutskii in wood—both done in 1963—property of the Ministry of Culture of the Ukrainian SSR). A series of graphic and sculptured works, Throughout Egypt (1961–64), and his monuments (to the Kovpak partisans in the city of Iaremcha [forged copper], to the architects A. F. Ignashchenko and S. M. Tutuchenko, to Chekists in Kiev [granite], and to the architect A. F. Ignashchenko—the last two in 1967) are permeated by lyricism and dramatic tension. Since 1966, Borodai has been rector of the Kiev Art Institute. He has been awarded four orders and also medals.
