Unlike Como, Maggiore has a number of islands, with the most famous the three Borromean Islands in the south.
The main attraction is the Borromean Islands, four small oases in a corner of the lake, all accessible by boat apart from one, San Giovanni, which is a private home.
Half-way up, the Alpine Garden forms a natural balcony overlooking the Borromean Islands.
