Bottomless Lakes State Park Location: 12 miles east of Roswell on US 380, then south 3 miles on NM 409. Facilities: 37 developed campsites (32 with electric hookups), restrooms (é), showers, picnic areas (é), group shelter, playground, trails, swimming beach, courtesy dock, pedal boat rentals, visitor center/interpretive center. Activities: Camping, boating (under 3 hp), fishing, swimming, scuba diving, hiking, interpretive programs (seasonal). Special Features: Bordered by high red bluffs, the seven small lakes at this park were formed when circulating water dissolved gypsum and salt deposits in underlying rock formations, creating a network of underground cavities. The roofs of some of those caverns collapsed under their own weight, and the resulting sinkholes filled with water. Park is New Mexico's first state park.
