Boufflers, Louis François, duc de (lwē fräNswä` dük də b
flĕr`), 1644–1711, marshal and peer of France. He served under the French commanders François de Créquy and the vicomte de Turenne. King Louis XIV created him a duke in 1694. His best-known exploits are his defense of Namur (1695) in the War of the Grand Alliance; and in the War of the Spanish Succession his defense of Lille against the duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene (1708), and his skillful retreat from the field of Malplaquet (1709).Want to thank TFD for its existence?
