On the northern boundary of the ID panhandle; organized Jan 23, 1915 from Kootenai and Bonner counties. Name Origin: Because it borders Canada on the north, MT on the east, and WA on the west.

Area (sq mi): 1278.21 (land 1268.81; water 9.40). Pop per sq mi: 8.40.
Pop 2005: 10,619. State rank: 26. Pop change: 2000-20005 7.60%; 1990-2000 18.50%. Pop 2000: 9,871 (White 93.20%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 3.40%; Asian 0.60%; Other 4.10%). Foreign born: 2.90%. Median age: 38.30.
Income 2000: per capita $14,636; median household $31,250; Pop below poverty level: 15.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $17,045-$18,542.
Unemployment 2004: 6.90%. Change from 2000: -2.20%. Median travel time to work: 21.50 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 13.60%.
