Bournemouth

Bournemouth (bôrn`məth), city (1991 pop. 142,849) and district, Dorset, S central England, on Poole Bay. It has grown since the middle of the 19th cent. from a small fishing village in the sheltered, pine-wooded valley of the Bourne to a popular resort and fine-arts center. It has an excellent sandy beach, a temperate climate, and numerous parks. The writer Mary Shelley Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft, 1797–1851, English author; daughter of William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft . In 1814 she fell in love with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley , accompanied him abroad, and after the death of his first wife in 1816 was married to him.

Bournemouth

Seaside resort and unitary authority (pop., 2001: 163,441), Dorset, southern England, on the English Channel. It dates from 1810 but did not grow rapidly until after the coming of the railway in 1870. Predominantly a resort and residential town, it is one of England's main convention centres and is popular with retirees.
