Bovet, Daniel 

Born Mar. 23, 1907, in Neuchâtel. Swiss-Italian pharmacologist.

Bovet graduated from the faculty of medicine at the University of Geneva in 1929, and from 1929 to 1947 he was a research assistant at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. From 1947 to 1964 he headed the chemotherapy department at the Higher Institute of Health in Rome. From 1964 to 1971 he was professor of pharmacology at the University of Sassari, and in 1971 he became a professor at the University of Rome.

Bovet’s principal works deal with the relationship between the chemical structure and pharmacological action of various substances. He was one of the first to discover the mechanisms involved in the antibacterial action of sulfanilamides. He also established the laws that govern the structure and determine the activity of curare-like agents and antihistamines.

Bovet received a Nobel Prize in 1957.
