bowline Nautical a line for controlling the weather leech of a square sail when a vessel is close-hauled bowline [′bau̇‚līn] (naval architecture) A rope attached to the vertical edge of a square sail near its midpoint, and used to keep the sail's weather edge taut forward when the vessel is close-hauled.
