Bowersock, Glen (Warren) (1936–  ) classicist, historian; born in Providence, R.I. After graduating summa cum laude in classics from Harvard (1957), he went as a Rhodes Scholar (1957–61) to Oxford (D.Phil. ancient history 1962) and then returned to teach at Harvard (1962–80) before becoming professor at the School of Historical Studies, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, N.J. (1980). In works like Greek Sophists in the Roman Empire (1969) and Roman Arabia (1983), he examined areas and epochs previously neglected. His Sather lectures at the University of California (1991–92) were published as Fiction and History: From Nero to Julian. His Hellenism in Late Antiquity won the James H. Breasted Prize in 1992.
