On the northeastern border of TX, northwest of Shreveport, LA; organized 1840 (prior to statehood) from Red River County. Name Origin: For Col. James A. Bowie (1795-1836), pioneer and officer in the Texas Revolution, killled at the Alamo. The bowie knife is named for him.

Area (sq mi): 922.77 (land 887.87; water 34.90). Pop per sq mi: 102.10.
Pop 2005: 90,643. State rank: 39. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.50%; 1990-2000 9.40%. Pop 2000: 89,306 (White 70.20%; Black or African American 23.40%; Hispanic or Latino 4.50%; Asian 0.40%; Other 2.80%). Foreign born: 1.50%. Median age: 36.30.
Income 2000: per capita $17,357; median household $33,001; Pop below poverty level: 17.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,795-$24,540.
