Boyd Orr, John Boyd Orr, 1st Baron, 1880–1971, British nutritionist and agricultural scientist, b. Scotland, grad. Univ. of Glasgow. He was professor of agriculture at the Univ. of Aberdeen (1942–45), government consultant on nutrition and health, and director-general (1946–47) of the Food and Agriculture Organization Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), specialized agency of the United Nations, established in 1945. Knighted in 1935, he was created baron in 1949. He was awarded the 1949 Nobel Peace Prize for advocating a world food policy based on human needs rather than trade interests. His writings include The National Food Supply and Its Influence on Public Health (1934), Food and the People (1943), Food—the Foundation of World Unity (1948), and The White Man's Dilemma (1953).
