Boymans-Van Beuningen Museum

(Rotterdam), next to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the largest art museum in the Netherlands.

The Boymans-van Beuningen Museum was founded in 1847. (Until 1949 it was known as the Boymans Museum.) The basis of the collection consisted of the private collections of F. J. O. Boymans and D. G. van Beuningen. There are fine collections of paintings, sculpture, and drawings of the Western European schools of the 15th to 20th centuries and of the decorative arts of Europe and Asia. Of particular importance are the collections of paintings by the Dutch masters of the 15th to 17th centuries—H. Bosch, H. Seghers, Rembrandt, E. de Witte, and others.

Henket's extension to the Boymans-Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam (AR July 1991) set a steel and glass pavilion distinctly apart from its masonry host building; while his more recent law courts at Middelburg (AR July 1996) demonstrated an interest in a variety of contextual issues, mostly addressed with abstract, compositional devices.
