On the south-central border of MI; established Oct 29, 1829 (prior to statehood) from Saint Joseph County. Name Origin: For John Branch (1782-1863), NC governor (1817-20), U.S. secretary of the navy (1829-31), and governor of FL Territory (1844-45).

Area (sq mi): 519.49 (land 507.41; water 12.08). Pop per sq mi: 91.60.
Pop 2005: 46,460. State rank: 38. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.50%; 1990-2000 10.30%. Pop 2000: 45,787 (White 92.00%; Black or African American 2.60%; Hispanic or Latino 3.00%; Asian 0.40%; Other 3.60%). Foreign born: 2.60%. Median age: 36.70.
