Brandenburg, Nikolai Efimovich
Born Aug. 8 (20), 1839, in St. Petersburg; died there on Aug. 31 (Sept. 13), 1903. Russian archaeologist, military historian, and lieutenant-general (1896). Brandenburg participated in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78. From 1872 until the end of his life he directed the Artillery Museum in St. Petersburg. He composed a museum catalog in which he tried to work out the history of Russian artillery in a scholarly fashion. He conducted excavations and research on the ruins of the ancient fortress in Staraia Ladoga. Brandenburg’s research on Slavic burial mounds in St. Petersburg and Novgorod provinces, as well as on Scythian and nomadic burial mounds in southern Russia, was an important contribution to Russian archaeology.
