Brandt, Fedor

Brandt, Fedor Fedorovich 

(Johann Freidrich Brandt). Born May 13 (25), 1802, in Juterbog; died July 3 (15), 1879, in Merrekiul’, near Narva. Zoologist; native of Saxony.

Brandt was educated at the University of Berlin. In 1830 he was selected as an adjunct of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, and in 1831 he moved to Russia and headed the academy’s Zoological Museum, which was organized on the basis of the Kunstkamer collections. In 1832 he became an extraordinary academician and in 1833, a full academician. In the period of 1857–69 he was professor of medical surgery of the academy.

Brandt’s works deal with the systematics, paleontology, zoology, and zoogeography of mammals and other vertebrates. Brandt was one of the authors of the two-volume Medicinal Zoology (1829–34), as well as of A Short Outline of Comparative Anatomy, With an Appendix of the History of the Development of Animals (1858).
