city (1991 pop. 81,997), S Ont., Canada, on the Grand River. It is a leading manufacturing city, noted particularly for its large farm implement factories. The city was named for the Mohawk chieftain Joseph BrantBrant, Joseph,
1742–1807, chief of the Mohawk. His Mohawk name is usually rendered as Thayendanegea. He served under Sir William Johnson in the French and Indian War, and Johnson sent him (1761) to Eleazar Wheelock's school for Native Americans in Lebanon, Conn.

The Mohawk Institute, a Native American residential school, is nearby. Alexander Graham Bell was living in Brantford in 1876 when he made his first successful experiment in the transmission of sound by electric wire. A museum, formerly his home, exhibits the first telephone.
