Brashman, Nikolai Dmitrievich

Born June 14 (25), 1796, in Rousinov (Moravia); died May 13 (25), 1866, in Moscow. Russian mathematician and specialist in mechanics. Corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1855) and professor at Moscow University (1834).

Brashman’s major works were on hydromechanics and the principle of least action. He was an outstanding teacher; P. L. Chebyshev and O. I. Somov were among his students. He did a great deal to develop a scientific basis for teaching mechanics. Brashman founded the Moscow Mathematical Society.
