Name Origin: For Carter Braxton (1736-97), VA House of Burgesses (1767-71; 1775), a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and a member of the council of state (1786-91; 1794-97). Area (sq mi): 516.17 (land 513.48; water 2.69). Pop per sq mi: 28.90. Pop 2005: 14,851. State rank: 39. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.00%; 1990-2000 13.10%. Pop 2000: 14,702 (White 97.60%; Black or African American 0.70%; Hispanic or Latino 0.40%; Asian 0.10%; Other 1.10%). Foreign born: 0.20%. Median age: 39.60.
