On central eastern border of TX, south of Houston; original county; organized Mar 17, 1836 (prior to statehood) from Old Mexican Municipality. Name Origin: For the Brazos River, which forms its northern border; a Latinized form of Spanish brazos 'arms' or 'forks' as the forks of a river.

Area (sq mi): 1597.44 (land 1386.40; water 211.04). Pop per sq mi: 200.90.
Pop 2005: 278,484. State rank: 15. Pop change: 2000-20005 15.20%; 1990-2000 26.10%. Pop 2000: 241,767 (White 65.40%; Black or African American 8.50%; Hispanic or Latino 22.80%; Asian 2.00%; Other 12.30%). Foreign born: 8.50%. Median age: 34.00.
Income 2000: per capita $20,021; median household $48,632; Pop below poverty level: 10.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $27,022-$27,985.
Unemployment 2004: 7.00%. Change from 2000: 1.10%. Median travel time to work: 28.00 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 40.30%.
