In east-central TX, northwest of Houston; organized Jan 30, 1841 (prior to statehood) from Washington County. Name Origin: For the Brazos River, which forms its western border; Spanish 'arms' or 'forks' as forks in a river.

Area (sq mi): 590.29 (land 585.78; water 4.51). Pop per sq mi: 266.80.
Pop 2005: 156,305. State rank: 23. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.60%; 1990-2000 25.10%. Pop 2000: 152,415 (White 66.00%; Black or African American 10.70%; Hispanic or Latino 17.90%; Asian 4.00%; Other 10.90%). Foreign born: 10.30%. Median age: 23.60.
Income 2000: per capita $16,212; median household $29,104; Pop below poverty level: 26.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $19,709-$21,741.
Unemployment 2004: 4.30%. Change from 2000: 2.70%. Median travel time to work: 16.70 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 7.00%.

    Some 34 people were treated at area hospitals for "inhalation issues" but none were in serious condition, said John Salsman, a spokesman for the Brazos County emergency management.
