breakout box

breakout box
A device inserted into a multiple-line cable for testing purposes that provides an external connecting point to each wire. A small LED may be attached to each line, which glows when a signal is present.

A device connected to a multiconductor cable that provides terminal connections to test the signals in a transmission.

Or at least a small breakout box saying "First in a series," "Second in a series," etc.
However, like Fern Britton, Sony have cheated a bit in shedding some of the bulk, with the TV having a separate breakout box.
Adam Ma'anit's intentionally provocative breakout box (Ethical Travel, NI 409) had a veneer of balance and perspective, but ultimately was a shallow cop out, providing excuses for people to fly much as usual.
