Bridges, Calvin B. (Blackman) (1889–1938) geneticist; born in Schuyler Falls, N.Y. He did postgraduate research at the Carnegie Institution (1915–19), became a faculty member there (1919–28), then moved to the California Institute of Technology with a group of Carnegie geneticists (1928–38). With mentor and colleague Thomas H. Morgan, he proved the chromosomal theory of heredity and determined the mechanism of sex-linkage in the fruit fly Drosophila.
