Briggs, Winslow R. (Russell) (1928–  ) plant physiologist; born in St. Paul, Minn. He taught and performed research at Stanford (1955–67), moved to Harvard (1967–73), then joined the Carnegie Laboratory at Stanford (1973). He made major contributions to studies of plant growth and the biochemistry and molecular biology of phytomorphogenesis (plant development) and photosynthesis. A dedicated educator, he was quoted as saying, "With gifted students, remarkable things are possible."
