steel bar with a clean, smooth, bright surface, which may be ground or, sometimes, polished, and a round cross section 0.2–25 mm in diameter; it is characterized by highly precise dimensions. Carbon and alloy tool steel and certain grades of alloy structural steel are chiefly produced in this form. Silver steel is used without mechanical surface working.
