Click the link for more information. . brimstone 1. an obsolete name for sulphur 2. a common yellow butterfly, Gonepteryx rhamni, of N temperate regions of the Old World: family Pieridae brimstone [′brim‚stōn] (mineralogy) A common or commercial name for native sulfur. Brimstone (Gonopteryx rhamni), a butterfly of the family Pieridae. The wings are angular, with a span of up to 6 cm. The males are lemon yellow, and the females are greenish white. In the middle of each wing there is a small orange-yellow spot. The brimstone is found throughout Europe and the temperate zone of Asia. Soon after the butterflies emerge from the pupae at the end of summer, they go into hibernation. Flight is resumed in early spring.
