Name Origin: For Capt. Andrew Briscoe (1810-49), Republic of TX officer, signer of the TX Declaration of Independence (1836), and chief justice of Harrisburg, TX (1836-39). Area (sq mi): 901.59 (land 900.25; water 1.33). Pop per sq mi: 1.80. Pop 2005: 1,644. State rank: 240. Pop change: 2000-20005 -8.20%; 1990-2000 -9.20%. Pop 2000: 1,790 (White 73.70%; Black or African American 2.30%; Hispanic or Latino 22.70%; Asian 0.10%; Other 14.40%). Foreign born: 4.90%. Median age: 39.90.
