Brittan, Sir Leon (brĭt`ən), 1939–, British politician. Educated at Cambridge, he was elected to Parliament as a Conservative in 1974. Under Margaret Thatcher Thatcher, Margaret Hilda Roberts Thatcher, Baroness, 1925–, British political leader. Great Britain's first woman prime minister, Thatcher served longer than any other British prime minister in the 20th cent.

He resigned from the government in the aftermath of the Westland helicopter affair (1986), which involved the leak of confidential communication.
