Brøgger, Waldemar Christofer 

Born Nov. 10 (22), 1851, in Christiania (Oslo); died there Feb. 17, 1940. Norwegian petrographer.

Brøgger was a professor at the University of Oslo from 1890 to 1917. The theory of differentiation (chemical differentiation) of magma is associated with his name. Br0gger introduced the terms “leucocratic” and “melanocratic” rocks (in the first of which, colorless components predominate and in the second, dark-colored components). Brøgger established a type of rock composed of orthoclase and plagioclase, to which he gave the general name of “monzonites.”
